International Forum on War History Past Events

The NIDS International Forum on War History, first held in 2002, reconsiders military history by comparing it bilaterally or multilaterally with other nations' military histories, providing a multifaceted viewpoint for an area of study which traditionally tends to be analyzed from a one-sided point of view. The forum started in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the National institute for Defense Studies, with an intention of deepening mutual understanding among the countries concerned and contributing to the promotion of trust among them.

19th International Forum on War History

19th Forum (2021)
"The First Gulf War in Historical Perspectives"

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1991 Gulf War. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq which triggered the Gulf War gave the world its first challenge since the end of the Cold War. The international communities' response to this challenge influenced the subsequent developments of world history in many aspects such as politics, diplomacy and military affairs. The forum of this year aims to conduct extensive study from both military and political points of view to assess the historical significance of this war in a broader context.

The forum will be held online to interact and share knowledge on security matters with a diverse audience while ensuring safety and reducing the spread of COVID-19 infection.
