NIDS' Center for Military History is Japan’s largest military history research institution. It conducts research on the military history of Japan and other countries in order to respond to the requirements of defense policy makers as well as to support the educational and training needs of the SDF. The study of military history is especially indispensable for providing the foundation for examining the nation’s current and future security environments and issues. In addition, nations can enhance the maintenance and facilitation of their current relationships by exchanging ideas concerning their historical perceptions of their relationship in the past. Because research on various countries’ historical perceptions is thus a key subject of research at NIDS, it now strives to expand the breadth of its research by taking a multi-perspective approach in its historical studies, uninhibited by narrow frameworks such as "Japanese military history" or "foreign military history."07ResearchPresentations at research meetingsResearch exchanges with overseas research institutionsResearch on World War II Military HistoryBy making use of newly released archival material and recent research results, and by incorporating the viewpoints of other countries, NIDS continues to study the military history of World War II.Research on the history of Japan’s post-World War Two national security policy NIDS conducts research studies on national security policy in post-war Japan, including the establishment and growth of the SDF, which has now entered the realm of history.
