Message from Mr. IMAKYUREI,
President, National Institute for Defense Studies

Welcome to the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) official website.
NIDS has approximately 90 researchers, and they engage in a broad range of projects on topics such as Japan’s security policy and global/regional affairs. Furthermore, their research and studies cover not only conventional domains such as laws, economy, society and military history, but also new domains including space and cyber issues. NIDS is designated as “the Organ Possessing Historical Documents” under “Public Records Management Act” and preserves a lot of military related historical documents. NIDS opens them to the public for use and thereby, contributes to various research activities on military history at home and abroad.
In addition, as the institute equivalent to national defense universities of other nations, NIDS provides education for senior leaders of the Ministry of Defense (MOD) and Self-Defense Forces (SDF) as well as officials from other ministries. In these education courses, NIDS provides lecture regarding national security and defense not only from military perspectives but also from political perspectives by collaborating with outside speakers from other organizations including diplomatic representatives in Japan.
As an institute playing a role in defense exchange and security dialogs of the MOD, NIDS conducts research/educational exchanges with other countries’ national defense research institutes. NIDS also hosts various types of international conferences, dispatches researchers to overseas and invites researchers from other countries, aiming that NIDS researchers will be able to develop network and deepen common understanding on security matters with researchers and experts overseas including private sector’s researchers.
NIDS publicizes research outcome of our activities by various means. To give some examples, we publish China Security Report, NIDS Perspectives, Security & Strategy, and Military History Studies Annual. China Security Report covers China’s military and security affairs from mid- and long-term perspectives. NIDS Perspectives addresses global strategy trend covering across regional and policy domains. Security & Strategy is an academic journal specialized for security where outside researchers can apply to post their articles. In Military History Studies Annual, you can learn our annual activities on military history studies. In addition to those publications, on our official website, NIDS posts “NIDS Commentary” where our researchers comment on and review security topics in a timely fashion as well as “NIDS Seminar”, which is editorials authored by our researchers and are also published on ASAGUMO newspaper.
NIDS will implement various PR efforts such as SNS so that we will be able to furnish the people of Japan with accurate knowledge and information as to security. I hope you all learn more about NIDS and get interested in our activities.
