Visit from Deputy Director of Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies
On November 15, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, James Hirai, along with two of his colleagues, paid a courtesy call to NIDS's Vice President Yoshihisa Nakano. Discussions were then held with the institute's researchers. Deputy Director Hirai introduced some of the center's efforts towards capacity building. An energetic exchange of opinions was then held with NIDS's researchers about the importance of supporting the creation of capacity relating to strategy in the Indo-Pacific.
Visit from Vice-Chairman Japaridze of the Anaklia Development Consortium
On November 15, Vice-Chairman of the Anaklia Development Consortium, Dr. Tedo Japaridze, visited NIDS to hold discussions with the institute's researchers. Dr. Japaridze spoke of the various approaches his country was receiving from Russia, Turkey, and China, due to its unique geographic position, and how Georgia was responding to this. NIDS researchers introduced the characteristics of East Asian approaches to diplomacy and security with Russia and China, as well as the unique methods of analyses and evaluation being used, ensuring an active exchange of opinions between both groups.
Visit from Director General of Policy Planning at Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
On November 13, Eerik Marmei, Director General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affair's Policy Planning Department, visited NIDS to hold a discussion with the director and researchers. Topics included matters of interest to both countries, such as the United States' commitment to its alliances, relationships with Russia and China, China's broad-reaching activities in the north polar regions, and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Visit from Director of Hungarian Regional Strategy Institute
On November 12, David Jozsef Szabo, the co-founder and director of the Trimarium Geostrategic Institute, visited NIDS, holding an exchange of opinions with the researchers there. Director Szabo spoke of Hungary's political and economic relationship with China, as well as Hungary's state of security. NIDS researchers introduced the characteristics of East Asian approaches to diplomacy and security with Russia and China, as well as the unique methods of analyses and evaluation being used, ensuring an active exchange of opinions between both groups.
Visiting Group from the PLA National Defence University's Research Division
On November 11, a delegation headed by the chief of the PLA National Defence University's Research Division , Major General Fang Lin, visited the National Insititute for Defense Studies for an exchange of opinions with the institute's researchers. The energetic discussions included topics such as strategy in the Indo-Pacific, the current and future relationship between China and Japan, denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and academic exchange between thinktanks.
Visiting Group from the PLA National Defence University
On November 5, a delegation of 26 researchers from the PLA National Defence University, headed by the university's Vice President Xiao Tianliang (a Lieutenant General), visited NIDS. A friendly discussion was held between Vice President Xiao Tianliang and NIDS's Vice President Yoshihisa Nakano, centered around an exchange between the institute and the university. An active exchange of opinions was then held between trainees from the institute's regular course and students from the university. Topics included the regional situation in the Asia-Pacific.
20th Japan-Korea Warfare History Research Cooperation Meeting
The 20th Japan-Korea Warfare History Research Cooperation Meeting was held on October 30. Invitees included Chief Researchers Jung Hyung Ah and Misook Lee from the Korean Institute for Military History at the Korean Ministry of National Defense. Japanese participants included Chief Researcher Ryotaro Shimizu and staff member Shinji Yamaguchi from the NIDS Center for Military History's Military History Research Department, who acted as both presenters and commentators.
The meeting involved a lively exchange of opinions from both Japanese and Korean perspectives, providing a variety of pointers for future research.
Visit from Parliamentary State Secretary, German Federal Ministry of Defence
On October 8, seven members of the Federal Republic of Germany's Ministry of Defence, including the Parliamentary State Secretary Mr. Thomas Silberhorn , visited the National Insititute for Defense Studies. A friendly gathering was held between the delegation, NIDS's President, Yukinari Hirose , and researchers. The gathering was primarily centered around issues in the Korean Peninsula and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy framework, with members holding an active exchange of opinions regarding the regional situation in the Asia-Pacific.
