On February 8, Vice President MG ADACHI participated as a panelist in the “Whole of Society Approach to National Cybersecurity” seminar at the British Embassy Tokyo, on the occasion of the visit of Ms. Lindy Cameron, Chief Executive Officer of the UK National Cyber Security Centre.
At the session “Russia-Ukraine Cyber Conflict and implications for the Indo-Pacific”, MG presented the current situation of cyber resilience, both in Japan and in the region.

ASEAN WORKSHOP 2024

Delighted to hold the ASEAN Workshop 2024 with five leading scholars from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia on January 30-31, 2024. The event explored regional perspectives on great-power rivalry and the role of alliance cooperation.

Defense research exchange with security institutes in Europe

From 22 to 27 January, Prof. Iida and Mr. Tanaka visited the United Kingdom.
During their visit to security research institutions including Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), King’s College London, Council on Geostrategy and others, they exchanged views on security issues in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, and strengthened mutual understanding and expanded their human network.

On January 11, Mr. Oguma gave the lecture titled “Pacifism Redefined? Japan’s Security Policy in the Era of Strategic Competition” at International Christian University (ICU). November 30, Vice President MG ADACHI participated as a panelist in the Day2 “The cyber and hybrid aspects of cognitive superiority” session, at CYDEF2023 in Tokyo.

NIDS Delegation to the Republic of Korea and Mongolia (Seoul, Chungcheongnam-do Province and Ulaanbaatar)

From December 11 to 15, President Ishikawa and Prof. Koike visited defense universities and thinktanks in the Republic of Korea and Mongolia.
During their visit, President Ishikawa briefed the experts on Japan’s new security and defense strategy. They exchanged views on the regional strategic environment based on the brief, and strengthened mutual understanding and expanded their human network as well.

From November 28 to December 1, Prof. Eifuku and Prof. Yatsuzuka visited Fiji.
During their visit to the military agencies and universities, they collected useful information and built human network. In addition to that, by enhancing Fiji's understanding on Japan's national security policies, they strengthened relationships with Pacific Islands, which has contributed to realizing the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific(FOIP)” vision.

Joint Japanese German Military History and Security Studies Program 2023

On 20-24 November, Col. Dr. Kobashi and Dr. Ito from the Center for Military History of NIDS visited the Bundeswehr Centre of Military History and Social Sciences (ZMSBw) in Potsdam, Germany. They participated in the 6th bilateral cooperation program entitled “Shaping and Maintaining World Order in Contested Times Perspectives from the Cold War and Beyond”. Theprogram was held face-to-face for the first time in 4 years, with active and meaningful discussions.
ZMSBw also guided NIDS delegation to visit the Military History Museum of the German Armed Forces in Dresden and the Political Archive of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, and to deepen understandings of the German military history. The program gave an opportunity to contribute to the further development of cooperation between the two institutes.

From November 18 to November 23, COL. Ikegami, Prof. Nishino and Prof. Yoshida visited Qatar.
During their visit to the Joaan Bin Jassim Academy for Defence Studies, other military and government agencies, and research institutes, they exchanged views on the regional strategic environment, and strengthened mutual understanding and expanded their human network.

Concept Meeting on Future Trends in the Indo-Pacific

On November 15, NIDS hosted the 2nd meeting on “Future Trends in the Indo-Pacific,” in partnership with CSDS at the VUB’s Brussels School of Governance, Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), and CERI at Sciences-Po Paris. This is part of a NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) project. Key speakers included NIDS President Takeshi Ishikawa, David van Weel, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, Brig. Gen. George B. Rowell IV, USFJ Deputy Commander and Professor Masayuki Masuda, Head of NIDS Asia & Africa Division.

November 14, NIDS held panel discussion titled “War in Ukraine and the future of Sino-Russian relations” at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus with the Department of Policy Management, Keio University.

Briefing on cognitive warfare to the National Defence members in Canada

On October 30, Vice President MG ADACHI delivered a briefing to the members belonging to Strategic Assessment of the Department of National Defence in Canada. The theme was " insights on cognitive warfare, its implications from a Japanese perspective, and Japan’s strategies of response. " From their positive attitude and questions based on their profound understanding, it was confirmed how important congnitive war is and how significant this briefing was.

On September 25, NIDS held a meeting with the delegation of the National Defence College, Bangladesh (NDC), headed by Maj Gen (Retd) Md Rashed Amin.

From September 13 to 16, President Ishikawa and Dr. Tsukamoto visited Austraria (Canberra) to participate in the conference hosted by ASPI. At the conference, they shared the view on cooperation with Australia and Indo-Pacific countries and exchanged views on national security issues with other participants.
Also, they discussed as to ways to further strethen cooperation between NIDS and defense-related think-tanks and educational institutions in Austraria.

Attendance at the rehearsal in Canada for " CYBER DEFENSE COOPERATION (CDC) WORKSHOP "

From August 20 to August 26, Vice President MG ADACHI visited Canada (Ottawa) to participate in the rehearsal for CDC WORKSHOP. CDC WORKSHOP is the Japan-U.S.-Canada joint cyber defense exercise, which will be conducted in Tokyo in September.
Participants mainly shared a flow of the exercise and the technique to be an effective facilitator during the rehearsal. Additionally, a tour for Canadian Cyber Forces and its facilities was conducted in order to moderate the workshop smoothly.

On August 8, NIDS invited Dr. Alex Bristow, Deputy Director - Strategic Policy, Defence, Strategy and National Security Program, ASPI and Ms. Lucy Albiston, Pacific Analyst, Defence, Strategy and National Security Program, ASPI, to held a workshop.

From July 30 to August 4, NIDS delegation, including Vice President MG ADACHI, COL IKEGAMI, and Ms. ASAMI, visited Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) to participate in the 25th ASEAN Regional Forum Heads of Defence Universities, Colleges and Institutions Meeting(ARF HDUCIM). On June 15, NIDS held talks with the delegation of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The delegation lead, Col Jason Perry, USMC, Senior Marine Representative of NPS, is a graduate of the NIDS 62nd Regular Course.

NIDS Delegation to Seoul (Exchange Lectures Program)

From June 13 to 16, Prof. Izuyama, Director of Security Studies Department, and Prof. Koike, visited Korea National Defense University (KNDU) in Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea (ROK).
During their visit, Prof. Izuyama delivered a lecture on Japan’s defense policy to the KNDU students, and the two exchanged their views on Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation with professors and students at the university. The importance of NIDS-KNDU partnership was reiterated at the meeting with Major General Hong Seog Kim, President of KNDU.

Attendance at the NATO Conference of Commandants (NATO CoC)

From May 8 to 13, NIDS delegation, including President. KAWASAKI, Col OMORI and Mr. SETO, visited ESTONIA (Tallin) to participate in the 52th NATO Conference of Commandants (NATO CoC). During 52th NATO CoC, we discussed future of military education vis-à-vis current and emerging security challenges in Europe and beyond. Our participation in the NATO CoC enabled NIDS to strengthen partnership with national defense universities of NATO member states and partners.

The 25th Mansfield Fellow from the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation

From November 15 to December 17, Lieutenant Commander Veronica Kennedy from the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation studied at the NIDS as the 25th Mansfield Fellow.

The Mansfield Fellowship Program provides opportunities for U.S. federal government employees with training in the Japanese government agencies, aiming to contribute to strengthening relationships between Japan and the U.S.

During the training at NIDS, Lieutenant Commander Veronica Kennedy learned the features and functions of the NIDS, a think tank of the Ministry of Defense as well as the only national academic research institute concerned with security in Japan. She also exchanged views with NIDS scholars on the security environment surrounding the Japan-U.S. Alliance. With her contributions to the program, the Japan-U.S. relations for the next generation have become more strengthened and solid.

On November 11, Shaliman Lockman, Director of the Office of the Director General of the Malaysian Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), and researchers from the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) exchanged views online on the situation surrounding Malaysia in the South China Sea.

NATO Conference of Commandants

President Saito and Director Yoshizaki from National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) visited Copenhagen, the Kingdom of Denmark to participate in the 50th Conference of Commandants (CoC 2021) held from October 12 to 14. The conference is an annual meeting held on a rotating basis by the National Defense Universities of NATO member countries, and it brings together the commandants of the National Defense Universities of NATO member countries and partner countries. The main theme of the meeting this year was "Professional Military Education (PME) and the Future Warfighter," focusing on the future of warfare, future warfighters' skills, and the implications on PME. Physical attendees, who were allowed to participate face-to-face on the condition that they were fully vaccinated, exchanged opinions and information at the forum.

Online Participation in the ARF HDUCIM

From October 4 to 6, President Saito and 4 others from National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) participated in the 24th ASEAN Regional Forum Heads of Defence Universities/Colleges/Institutions Meeting (ARF HDUCIM) organized by the National Defense University of Pakistan. At the conference, held online under the COVID-19 pandemic, participants from National Defense Universities and others presented their reports on the general theme of "Seeking Peace: Beyond the Traditional Perspective." President Saito and Director Yoshizaki introduced activities and education conducted at NIDS.

Four Decades have passed since the NIDS Regular Course accepting international students in 1981. NIDS create the Alumni badge for symbolizing our alumni connections.

Exchange of ideas with US Army War College

On December 22, the 68th regular course students joined an inaugural dialogue between the faculties in NIDS and the the US Army War College.
We exchanged some ideas about IndoPacific security. We deepened mutual understanding through presentations from the energetic discussions.
